The Art of Teaching English in Japan

Being in a Japanese School - Mentally
A Look at Life in a Japanese School
Through a Pair of Western Eyes

"What's the point of this lesson?" various teachers and students

This is where you will find all the pages that have to do with anything related to the process of putting together and executing a lesson in a classroom packed full of living, breathing Japanese students.

These posts are pretty straight forward. The theme here is to give you an idea of a typical teaching cycle (about a week), where you have to show up to school, get your schedule, plan your lessons (or not), and deal with everything around you.

Westerners have a mind set of job titles and descriptions. "Not my job," is a common phrase heard in the West. Not in Japan. You may enter the school on your first day thinking, "Ok, I'm here to teach some English lessons." But after a few weeks, you'll realize that the responsibilities and expectations of the other Japanese teachers around you is SO massive, that you may start to feel guilty of your relative light-load. These posts try to capture that sentiment.........enjoy.
